Before applying for a Bulgarian work visa, foreign citizens must obtain a work permit from a local employer. This document is issued at the request of the owner interested in the employee and must be approved by the Ministry of Employment and Social Policy. The permit is valid for up to one year with the right to renew.

The employer may be a natural or legal person. The employer must justify the absence of a candidate for a vacant position among Bulgarian residents and citizens of the European Union, and also confirm that the foreign applicant will be provided with the same working conditions and remuneration as for Bulgarian citizens.

To obtain a work permit, the necessary documents are submitted in original or notarized, also translated into Bulgarian:

• the passport;
• statement;
• a contract signed by the employer or a business registration certificate.

Candidates for employment must have the appropriate level of skills and knowledge for the specialty, have a diploma of specialized education, document and confirm solvency for the period of stay in the country. A tenancy agreement or ownership of real estate is also required if these agreements are not provided with the employer.

Legislation defines the categories of foreigners who do not need to obtain a work permit. These are trade representatives of international companies registered with the National Chamber of Commerce, members of the board, boards of directors who have not concluded an employment contract, family members of citizens of the European Union and a number of other categories. A complete list of persons who may not be issued a work permit is given in the Aliens Act.

For some categories of citizens there is a simplified procedure for issuing permits. These include:

• lecturers, teachers, professors;
• persons whose activities in the territory of the country result from international treaties;
• athletes, coaches;
• persons of Bulgarian origin.

The Law of Bulgaria on Foreigners defines the following grounds for issuing a work visa:

• a contract with an employer drawn up in accordance with the labor legislation of the state. The visa is issued for the period stipulated by the employment contract (usually for 1 year);
• employment in an international company operating in Bulgaria;
• running your own business with the allocation of jobs to Bulgarian citizens (at least ten);
• freelancing with a proven source of income.

Categories of visa permits:

• short-term visas that allow you to stay in the country for 3 months. They are issued mainly for seasonal work;
• multiple visas, allow you to live and work for ninety days every six months;
• national D with the right of residence for one to two years, with the possibility of extension up to 5 years.

Documents are reviewed within 3-7 days, but the review period may be extended.

Residence permit in Bulgaria
